About Us

Last Planet Theatre was founded in 1998 and is dedicated to producing dream plays unhindered by the conventions of both mainstream and avant-garde theatre. From the beginning, we have sought to create unforgettable and unique theatrical experiences for our audiences. We turn straight plays into quasi-Brechtian musicals and chamber dramas into multi-scenic dreamscapes. Although our productions are highly theatrical and stylized, we’re committed to exploring the speed and possibilities of cinematic staging, always looking for new and more effective forms of realism.

Our productions have been widely reviewed in Bay Area weeklies and dailies ranging from the San Francisco Bay Guardian and SF Weekly to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Examiner and the Oakland Tribune. We have received critical recognition for filling a “vital niche” in the Bay Area theater scene, “tackling challenging work most other companies would be afraid to touch” (San Francisco Bay Guardian).

At this moment, we’ve evolved into a group of theatre artists who share a belief in a theatre that courts both disaster and uncertain feeling. As we grow in the future, we want to continue producing plays that some audience members might find difficult, uncomfortable or objectionable. We do so not out of a desire to deliberately provoke, but to continually test how far we can take ideas and emotions. For us, the theater is a realm of exploration, where violently disagreeing with or feeling ambiguously about a play could be a virtue. The “could be” is important because we believe in the provisional nature of art, that its strength and power is in delaying definition, in defying the need to declare what Last Planet is or what our audiences want. More than anything we’re committed to the value of not knowing and of being fully alive to the power of pure possibility. Like John Keats’ theory of negative capability, we seek to resist everything that we are or will become.
